Components are the materials from which most pieces of equipment in the Commonwealth are created. From the components you can assemble modifications, construct buildings and make certain drugs.
Components, as a rule, are obtained from trash (steel can be obtained from tin cans, springs from watches, etc.). All the trash you have collected can be viewed on the “Items” (Prev) tab, in the “Junk” section.
In the workshops you can also disassemble weapons and armor for parts (see section “Disassembly into parts”) or dismantle unnecessary buildings.
You can read more about using the workshop in the “Workshop Basics” section.
Using Components
When you craft an item, whether at a Supply Center, Mod Station, or Workshop, all of your junk containing the required components will automatically be dismantled for parts.
Useful trash can also be stored directly at the workbench or in the workshop. When creating items, the trash from the storage will be consumed first.
Tags
If you don't have the components needed to craft an item, you can mark them for easier locating directly in the Items tab of the Pip-Boy.
To mark a component, go to the "Items" tab, open the "Junk" section and press [C] to switch to the component overview. This will display a list of all the components that can be extracted from the items you have. To mark a component, select it and press [Q].
If you come across an item that contains one of the marked components, you will see a small magnifying glass icon next to its name.
In the supply creation points and modification creation points, you can also mark modifications and formulas. To mark a modification or formula, select it from the modifications/formulas and recipes menu and press [Space]. This will mark all the missing components needed to create the selected item.
Taking it apart
Any weapon or armor can be disassembled into its component parts.
To disassemble an item, go to the modification creation point. Select the item you want to disassemble on the Items screen and press [R]. Please note: disassembling an item into pieces will destroy both the item itself and any modifications attached to it.
You can also demolish an unnecessary building using a workshop. To dismantle, enter the workshop menu, select a building and press [R]
