The specifications indicate that the TFT matrix is ​​covered with scratch-resistant glass, but I have doubts about this. It looks like plastic and when pressed harder it is pressed, leaving tasty stains on the screen. The screen itself has a resolution of 320 x 480 pixels that is normal for its diagonal, but small for today. For pipiai lovers, this value is 180. It is quite difficult to see anything in the sun. The display can only recognize two fingers of the owner at a time. Above it is the Sony logo, a neat speaker slot and a barely noticeable proximity sensor. At the bottom there are three standard touch buttons for calling submenus, going back and to the home screen.

The rest of the body is the back cover. It also covers the side edges, without forcing the owner to think about tape and coupons to eliminate backlashes and squeaks. In the black version, which was tested, the lid is made of soft touch plastic; the silver version cannot boast of this.

Removing the cover, you can see a 1500 mAh battery, from which the smartphone can work for a day and a half with two hours of calls, two hours of music and moderate surfing the Internet. And here the small screen gives its advantages.

The camera is the weakest point in the phone. A 3-megapixel module without flash and autofocus is not capable of producing sane pictures even in good lighting. Video recording is the same, with VGA resolution.

Everyone understands that this is an opportunity for the manufacturer to distinguish its device from its competitors, but it is the Xperia UI that slightly spoils the impression of the fourth Android. The fact is that relics of the past are popping up everywhere, namely interface elements from Android 2.3, and it looks ugly.

In general, this is the same interface that was on the company’s devices at the beginning of 2011. There are five home screens. It is impossible to do more or less. You can create folders on desktops that can be sent to the bottom panel. There is a standard Sony trick of collecting all widgets by pinching the display. What is the point of this remains a mystery to me. The main menu scrolls horizontally; you cannot create folders in it; applications can only be sorted or moved. The widget menu is called up (as in older versions of the OS) by long pressing on the desktop. It is worth saying that the widget selection window itself has been redesigned, and they are scrolled through in a carousel, with a preview of what exactly you will see on the screen.

The keyboard here is also not standard, but an Xperia keyboard. It looks like a copy of the iOS keyboard. The nice thing is that typing on it even with a small physical screen size is surprisingly convenient.

Cards, seeds, two slots

Xperia Tipo Dual boasts two SIM card slots. And in this regard, he is not at all “like a dual,” but directly “I answer, a dual!” Although there is only one radio module, it performs its functions well. In the status line, two network indicators are visible at once; the active one is highlighted in color. Sony didn’t fool people and made it so that the side key for switching cards switches them, and does not call up the settings menu. Speaking about the settings, it is worth noting that they are not rich, but they have everything you need. Even profiles showing when which SIM card is active on weekdays and weekends. Plus, the manufacturer has added a couple of widgets for viewing the status of SIM cards. Testing has shown that the smartphone restores communication on the second card 5-7 seconds after the conversation on the first is completed, and this is a good result.

Both cards are located near the battery. The top one is pulled out just like that, the bottom one needs to be pryed off with a special guide. Hot swapping is not possible without removing the battery.

Results

The first impression was that Sony simply played a number and released a dual-card smartphone just to be represented in this niche. Judge for yourself - a small screen on which it is simply inconvenient to read anything more serious than an SMS, the “supposedly” camera and design are not for everyone. Despite this, with every day of use I realized that such a smartphone had to come out. The size of the screen is dictated by the size of the body itself, the design is not perceived with hostility over time, and the camera here cannot break records. And all because Tipo Dual is a budget employee. But at the same time, Sony made a high-quality case, which is worth its weight in gold in such phones. At the same time, it has one of the latest versions of the OS installed, and in general it performs its phone functions efficiently. All these nuances will help the baby Tipo find its buyer.

Design and ergonomics

The smartphone cannot be called thin; it does not have any design delights. However, it has everything to make working with it as convenient as possible. This is facilitated by the non-slip back panel, the recess under the display and, in fact, modest dimensions (except for thickness), including the weight of a chocolate bar. Based on this, we can assume that the main target audience of the smartphone is the young audience.


The smartphone is offered in two body colors – black and white. In the first case, the frame running around the perimeter of the case and the hardware keys are dark graphite in color. In the white version, everything except the backing under the touch panel is white. We are testing a smartphone with a black body.


The front panel is covered with plastic, which, judging by the information on the manufacturer's website, is scratch-resistant. It was not possible to find out this during the test, but you notice that the plastic bends literally immediately; as soon as you press it a little harder, streaks “float” across the screen. It’s worth noting that you still shouldn’t expect to see glass in such a cheap device if we’re talking about a new smartphone.
At the top there is a proximity sensor, an event indicator, a speaker slot and a logo. Next comes a 3.2-inch TFT screen, under which there are three touch keys – “Back”, “Home” and “Menu”. The keys are located at the same height as the main part of the front panel. Under the touch keys there is a small recess where the thumb rests comfortably. There is another logo on it - Xperia. Since the smartphone uses plastic instead of glass, an oleophobic coating is out of the question. The plastic quickly gets dirty and is reluctant to get rid of greasy stains left by fingerprints.

At the top end there is a power button, which is almost impossible to find - it is located on the same level as the body. To the right of it you can see a hole for a 3.5 mm headphone plug.
At the bottom there is nothing except a small microphone hole and a recess for removing the back panel.
On the left side there is a Micro-USB connector. On the right side, from top to bottom, there are a double volume key, a SIM priority switch button and an eyelet for attaching a strap. The convenience of working with them is approximately at the same level as with the power key, which saves the fact that you use them less often.







The back side, also known as a removable panel, is made of plastic with soft-touch coating. In the upper left corner there is a 3 MP camera lens, in the lower center there is a figured Sony Ericsson logo, below Xperia, and even lower there is an oblong slot for a multimedia speaker. Under the cover there is a battery with a capacity of 1500 mAh; it, in turn, covers slots for micro memory cards, and two slots for SIM cards of the usual format. The smartphone comes with two adapters from micro SIM cards to regular ones. The adapters are made of transparent plastic of a bluish tint, the central part of which has an adhesive surface. It is into this that the microSIM is inserted, thus turning into a miniSIM.





The quality of fit of the parts is good, but there are problems with the assembly - the body creaks, and there is a high probability that this will only get worse over time.

Interface and software

As with all recent Sony devices, the Xperia tipo dual runs the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich operating system, on top of which the proprietary Xperia UX shell is used. The possibilities for personalizing the interface are minimal; the situation is saved by a wide range of pre-installed applications and widgets. There are enough of them to fill five desktop windows.

Working with telephone functions - calls, contacts, messages - is implemented well. Particularly pleasant is the fact that despite the modest size of the screen, even those with large fingers can type text with a minimum number of erroneous clicks.
Settings for working with SIM cards are located in a separate menu. In it, the user specifies which card will be used by default for certain actions. The sound profile of each SIM is configured in the “Sounds” menu. By default, the main SIM is the one inserted into slot 1, but if desired, it can be swapped with the second one by pressing a key on the right side.

Hardware platform

The smartphone uses a Qualcomm MSM7225AA chipset clocked at 800 MHz, an Adreno 200 graphics core, 512 MB of RAM and 2.5 GB of flash storage available to the user. This amount of RAM and ROM is not typical for smartphones costing 1,400 hryvnia, which can be considered an advantage of the Sony Xperia tipo dual. As already mentioned, the battery capacity is 1500 mAh, which is more than enough for such a device. The working hours are good. The GLBenchmark battery test at 50% load and 30 frames/s showed more than six hours; in Antutu Tester the smartphone worked for 5 hours. These results indicate that the user can expect up to two days of work under heavy load. With moderate use: up to 15 minutes of calls a day, several photos, video recording for no more than 5 minutes, listening to music for an hour and a half a day, automatic synchronization turned on, two SIMs, GPS, operating time can be three days. In more gentle modes you can last up to four to five days.

During testing, we did not experience any problems with network reception, including connection interruptions or loss. The quality and volume of the earpiece is above average, in most cases the volume is excessive. The volume and quality of the multimedia speaker is also pleasing, in contrast to the weak vibration alert. For incoming calls in noisy places, you have to rely on the volume of the speaker, and as already mentioned, everything is fine with it. The quality and, again, the volume of sound in the headphones, similar to the two previous cases, are at a good level, this is facilitated both by the presence of the xLoud item responsible for this parameter, and by the unexpectedly good included earphones. We have never seen a headset of this quality and type in smartphones costing less than 1,500 hryvnia.

Display and camera

The device has a TN matrix with a diagonal of 3.2 inches and a resolution of 480x320 pixels, the PPI indicator is 180. Viewing angles could be called excellent if it were not for the inversion of colors when the smartphone is tilted with the upper part towards you. When you approach the bottom, that is, if you look at the smartphone from the bottom, the colors just lose their saturation. Horizontal angles are more than decent. The minimum brightness level is slightly higher than what is required in the absence of external light sources and is 32 cd/m², while the maximum is one of the best in its price category, 402 cd/m², which is more than enough for comfortable work on a sunny day.

Unfortunately, there is nothing flattering to say about the camera. The three-megapixel matrix allows you to shoot with a maximum resolution of 2048x1536 pixels and record VGA video. Everything would be fine if these indicators were not spoiled by the lack of autofocus and flash. Based on this, you can hope for a good result, both video and photo, only in ideal conditions, and even then you shouldn’t expect anything special.

Results

Eight months have passed since we first used the Sony Xperia tipo dual smartphone. During this time, we managed to test many other Sony models, some of which left pleasant impressions, while others left negative ones. The model under consideration should consist entirely of compromises, since creating something worthy that costs less than its analogues is not very easy. Surprisingly, Sony coped with this task, although until now the devices from this manufacturer could not be called affordable. If we talk about what frankly disappointed us, then only the camera comes to mind. Yes, the body cannot be called monolithic, but this problem could always be dealt with, whereas teaching a smartphone to take better pictures will no longer be possible. The Xperia tipo dual doesn't have enough stars in its performance benchmarks either. If the above disadvantages are critical for you, you should look towards more expensive analogues. In all other respects, and this relates to the display, interface, operating time, quality of network signal reception and speaker volume, the smartphone turned out to be a worthy alternative to the Fly and Prestigio smartphones, and this concerns not only the cost, but also the package, which includes an excellent one, both for this price category headset.

Level 1 cache (L1)

Cache memory is used by the processor to reduce access time to more frequently used data and instructions.
