Project development history
Mozilla is a well-promoted brand known to a huge number of users of the World Wide Web. Born in 1998 as a highly specialized project intended mainly for web developers, after eight years of its development it has become a mass phenomenon. Today, Mozilla's main software product is the Firefox browser. It is the most popular among all projects of a non-profit organization, the press writes about it the most, and there is the most discussion about it on forums.
Meanwhile, Firefox emerged from the development of the first mozilla.org project - an integrated set of tools for working on the Web. Time dictated its conditions, the market demanded a simple, lightweight browser, which was Phoenix, which was later renamed Firefox. After some time, the development of Mozilla Suite stopped. The latest stable version of the product has an index of 1.7.13 and, in terms of its age and the technologies implemented in it, corresponds approximately to Firefox 1.0.
Stopping the development of Mozilla Suite did not mean its oblivion. The program still has a large number of fans who decided to independently continue the development of the project. Fortunately, mozilla.org kindly provided assistance in its development, providing all the necessary resources, including publication of the material on the official website, an FTP server, as well as all possible assistance from the organization’s staff. In the summer of 2005, work began on a new open source project, SeaMonkey (translated as “shrimp”), the goal of which was to combine the integrated structure of the Mozilla Suite with the new capabilities of the official Mozilla Firefox and Mozilla Thunderbird programs.
The new project was based on the Mozilla Suite code, which has been proven over the years and has enormous stability. Many features have been added to this foundation that have become familiar to users of Mozilla Firefox and Mozilla Thunderbird. The first version of the program was released in January 2006, and a year later the cross-platform SeaMonkey application was updated to version 1.1.
New SeaMonkey Features
The story about the product's capabilities should be divided into two parts. First, let's look at what was in the first version of SeaMonkey.
General improvements compared to Mozilla Suite:
- the software product has switched to the modern Gecko 1.8 engine, used today in Firefox 2.0
- Smooth text scrolling is now available in all SeaMonkey components, it is now possible to use site icons, and automatic resizing of images depending on the page scale

The SeaMonkey email client has undergone the most significant changes:
- all mailboxes can now be represented in one common group of folders, as is implemented in MS Outlook. The same appearance of folders as in The Bat!

The builder for creating Web pages and Chatzilla (the IRC client) have not undergone major changes. 
The new version of SeaMonkey 1.1 brought another batch of improvements. One of the main problems of Mozilla browsers recently has been the inability to open HTML pages from the hard drive if their names contain Cyrillic. Double clicking on a file resulted in an error message. SeaMonkey 1.1 allows you to do this with one caveat. If the path to the file contains Cyrillic characters, it is impossible to view the saved graphics.
The new version of the browser allows you to view thumbnails of tabs in tooltips. At the same time, their content is not overloaded with service information, but only shows the page title and its small copy. 
Bookmark management has been noticeably improved. You can access the properties of any element by right-clicking on a bookmark. Calling a special Bookmark Manager is required only in exceptional cases. Tooltips are no longer cut off; if there is no free space, their text is moved to the next line.
Spell checking as you type works not only in your email client, but also in any browser text window. As a result, the set of messages on forums and in diaries has been noticeably simplified. High literacy commands respect from interlocutors. The Russian version of the product includes two dictionaries that check spelling in Russian and English. You can also download from the Internet a universal dictionary that can check both languages simultaneously. 
The interface for working with tabs has been radically redesigned and improved. You can drag and drop bookmarks, links, and local files to open them in new tabs. In this case, any positions and overlaps are allowed. For example, you can open a page between existing tabs or on top of the active document. The arrow indicating the moving position is clearly positioned between tabs or in the middle of the document title. The program shows the current text zoom level as a percentage.
SeaMonkey allows you to monitor the status of your Internet connection. If there is a network connection, the online status is maintained, and if it is lost, it automatically changes to offline. As a result, you will not needlessly knock on closed gates when there is no Internet access.
Among the minor improvements to the browser, it is worth noting the appearance of a warning before opening the about:config page. An inexperienced user can ruin the operation of the program if he carelessly changes the settings. When using keywords, you do not need to enter the "keyword:" prefix. The address bar changes color when you visit a secure site. If you press Shift+Enter while in it, a window for saving the current page will be called up. You can set your browser so that the tab bar does not disappear after closing the last document.
The email client has a new labeling system based on tags. Each message can contain multiple tags. The developers have improved the algorithms for identifying fraudulent messages. At times, the program's vigilance is even excessive. Sometimes harmless mailings, for example, fall into the ranks of scammers. The settings for anti-advertising methods have also changed, allowing for more flexible tracking and destruction of spam. On Linux and Mac OS X systems, notification of new messages has been improved.
Some of these features are missing from Firefox and Thunderbird, but it's not hard to find examples to the contrary. SeaMonkey still does not support RSS technology. Browser bookmarks cannot be news folders, and your email client does not allow you to create an account to read RSS feeds. However, you can use extension modules to work with this technology for transmitting news and page updates.
The SeaMonkey toolbar still cannot be customized in simple, visual ways. You cannot rearrange icons or add new elements. The absence of an extension manager significantly complicates working with the corresponding modules. For example, you will not be able to remove the extension even if it does not work correctly. In addition, most of these programs are written for Firefox and only a small part of them can work in SeMonkey. There are literally only a few extensions written specifically for the integrated set of tools. Comparison of SeaMonkey with competitors
The integrated set, compared to independent components, requires much less system resources. Integration is not just a common engine, a core. It is noticeable in many small details. You're working in a browser and see a link to someone's email address. Click on it with the mouse, and the message creation window will immediately open. Please note that you do not need to launch external programs.
You read a message in an email client, see a link to a site, click on it with the mouse, after which a browser window immediately opens. The same thing happens if you open a link during a conversation on an IRC channel.
SeaMonkey has richer settings than Firefox and Thunderbird combined; for the convenience of working with the integrated set of tools, much fewer additional modules and extensions are required. This has a positive effect on the stability of the product. The second factor in SeaMonkey's high reliability is that it uses Mozilla Suite code that has been worked on for many years and has very few bugs.
SeaMonkey is easier and faster to configure than individual components, as many settings affect the entire toolkit at once. You are not required to navigate through the options of several programs, keeping in mind how other components have been configured.
SeaMonkey, being the successor to the Mozilla Suite, has a very deep history, so it is well known to old-timers of the Internet. Nothing has changed in the appearance of the program since June 1997, since the release of Netscape Communicator 4.
In addition to the obvious advantages, SeaMonkey also has significant disadvantages. Due to the close integration of the software product components, a careless change in the settings of one module can ruin the operation of the entire set as a whole. The lack of an extension manager makes working with extensions like playing Russian roulette. What if the installed module turns out to be inoperable? Removing it will no longer be so easy.
SeaMonkey's interface seems awkward for beginners who are already accustomed to customizing toolbars themselves. Installing some extensions is difficult. For example, a popular module can only be used in a modified form and requires prior installation of the extension. Such complexities do not add to SeaMonkey's appeal and create a negative image for the product. 
As mentioned earlier, SeaMonkey's structure is very similar to another toolkit, Opera. The target audience of both products overlaps in many ways, being represented, for the most part, by experienced users of personal computers, programmers, and web designers. Opera has a shorter first launch time and opens new windows, panels, and menus much faster. When comparing two products on one workstation, it is easy to conclude that Opera is much faster. On the other hand, the Gecko engine used in SeaMonkey allows you to display sites on the Web more accurately. This is due to the high popularity of Firefox, as a result of which many pages are checked for compatibility not only with Internet Explorer, as has been the case for many years, but also with browsers of the Mozilla family. Opera is extensible with the help of special programs - widgets. This mechanism is very easy to learn and has no problems with compatibility or stability. SeaMonkey, on the contrary, has big problems with connecting additional modules - extensions. The other side of the issue is that most widgets are useless decorations and entertainment, and extensions for SeaMonkey implement specific functions that are in demand in everyday work on the Internet.
The degree of integration of Opera's components is much higher than that of SeaMonkey. Various web pages, a list of mail messages, creating a letter, an IRC client window - all of these are just tabs inside a single working application window. If you work in SeaMonkey, then calling new components is always accompanied by the opening of a separate, independent working window. Output
