Information about the type of speakers and audio technologies supported by the device.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 4X is a budget smartphone with very powerful hardware for its class. The device also has a large screen and a first-class design. The official announcement of the gadget took place in February 2017.

Appearance and ergonomics

The body of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4X is made of high-quality anodized aluminum. At the back there are also plastic inserts for antennas with elegant dividing lines. The speaker for melodies is located on the bottom end, the rear panel is freed up for the camera and a fast fingerprint scanner. The shape of the case can be called neat and stylish due to the rounded corners and edges. Thanks to this design, the device feels comfortable in the palm of your hand, although it has a large screen covered with 2.5D glass. The brushed metal does not allow the device to slip much in your hands, so it is comfortable to hold. Below the display there are three touch buttons for navigation. But inside there is a powerful 4100 mAh battery. Available colors: gold, grey, pink and black. Dimensions: height - 151 mm, width - 76 mm, thickness - 8.5 mm, weight - 165 g.

Display

The inexpensive smartphone Redmi Note 4X has a large 5.5-inch screen. An IPS matrix is installed here, which is covered with elegant 2.5D glass on top. There is an effective oleophobic coating, which allows you to view the image directly on the street in sunny weather. The resolution of this display is 1920 by 1080 pixels, which allows the user to enjoy a detailed picture. The frames near the screen are not the thinnest. High contrast is complemented by the ability to independently adjust the color scheme to your liking. You can easily set warmer or cooler colors.

Hardware and performance

Redmi Note 4X comes in several versions. The gadget usually hits global markets with an eight-core Snapdragon 625 processor, 32 GB of built-in storage and 3 GB of RAM. Thus, in the AnTuTu test, this model scores about 62,000 points. As for the second version, it seems to be more advanced, as it is equipped with a MediaTek Helio X20 processor with ten cores. Moreover, 2 out of 10 cores are extremely fast - Cortex-A72. There is also more memory - 64 GB of user memory + 4 GB of RAM. Naturally, the latest modification shows slightly better performance, namely by 20-30%. At the same time, both devices demonstrate fast speed in everyday tasks. The buyer will be greeted out of the box with the Android 6.0 operating system along with the MIUI 8 shell. There are no errors or freezes, the phone works really clearly and quickly.

Communication and sound

Thanks to the high-quality conversational speaker in the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4X, the interlocutor can be heard quite well in different situations. However, its volume is above average. There are no problems with the microphone. It is worth highlighting the loud multimedia speaker, which can still wheeze at the highest volume. The device supports two SIM cards: micro SIM + nano SIM. It is able to operate in high-speed LTE networks.

Camera

The rear camera in the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4X smartphone is 13-megapixel, and also has an aperture ratio of 2.0 and a dual LED flash. Fast phase focusing makes it possible to instantly take the next photo. Using a large number of settings, you can create extraordinary shots with interesting effects. As for manual settings, only basic functions remain. The overall quality of the images is good. But in some cases, noise reduction does not work correctly. The situation with the front 5-megapixel camera is decent. It also received an aperture ratio of 2.0, and there is a function for enhancing self-portraits.

conclusions

Redmi Note 4X can pleasantly surprise a person who decides to purchase a budget smartphone. It has absolutely everything that is most important for a modern user - a large display, a good camera, excellent performance, fast Internet, high-quality sound and a wonderful design. But a price of around 10,000 rubles can really shock a potential buyer. The manufacturer has done a good job correcting the errors, so the device deserves all attention. If you want to buy a very inexpensive phone that is advanced in every sense, then the Redmi Note 4X will be one of the best options on the market.

Pros:

  • High performance for its class.
  • A large amount of memory.
  • Contrasting and massive display.

Video reviews

Let me first explain why it is still “Indian Chinese”.

Although there are opinions that the “X” prefix, as often happens, serves as an indicator of some kind of budget or reduction in price compared to the original Xiaomi Redmi Note 4, in fact, in this case this is not entirely true.

The new model is a modification aimed primarily at the Indian market, and since the original Redmi Note 4 model was not officially sold in India, the modified version entered the local market with exactly the same name, and the prefix “X” was added to the model name , already focused on the Chinese and European markets, in order to somehow avoid confusion.

The main difference between the original version and the modified one was the replacement of the MediaTek Helio X20 (MT6797) processor with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 (MSM8953), otherwise the version with the X prefix remained almost identical to the original.

In general, the characteristics of the Note 4X are as follows

Packaging and equipment

The packaging of the smartphone is minimalistic; the pinnacle of style in this case is the large inscription “4X” on the cover, which can only be seen from a certain angle.

The sticker on the back of the box indicates that the smartphone’s firmware is an international (Global) version, with support for the Russian language.

The package contents are also limited - a smartphone, a cable, a charger, a needle for opening the SIM card tray and instructions.

The included charger has a “Chinese” plug (which, by the way, is also noted on the packaging) and is designed for 5V 2A. I did not find any information that the smartphone supports fast charging technology.

Appearance and controls

The color scheme of the model range is represented by several variations, including very brightly youthful ones and, oddly enough, because of this, the cost can vary significantly. I purchased the classic version in silver.

Initially, a matte shipping film is glued to the screen.

The smartphone is made in a combination of metal and plastic. On the right side are the lock and volume buttons.

On the left is a combined pull-out tray in which you can install either two SIM cards of micro- and nano-sim format, or one SIM card and a microSD memory card.

At the bottom end there are holes for an external speaker and a standard micro-USB connector for charging, as well as connecting external devices (OTG).

At the top end there is a 3.5 mm headset jack, an IR transmitter window and a small hole for a noise-canceling microphone.

Below the screen there are three functional backlit touch buttons, above there is a standard set of earpiece, front camera, proximity and light sensors, as well as a nice addition in the form of a three-color LED for event indication.

At the rear we are greeted by a cast, slightly rough metal body with thin inserts of glossy anodized aluminum, while, despite the visual deception, the upper and lower parts of the body are made of plastic. The reason for this is not just the banal desire of the manufacturer to save on metal, but the practical need to improve the quality of signal reception, because According to the information found, antennas are located under them.

At the top there is a photo-video camera peephole, a two-color LED flash and a fingerprint sensor.

Screen

The entire front panel of the device is covered with protective glass with an oleophobic coating and rounded edges (2.5D). The sensor is capable of recognizing up to 10 simultaneous touches, for what it can be used is difficult to say, but nevertheless.

Just like the Redmi Note 4, the 5.5-inch screen here is built using IPS technology with a pixel density of 401 ppi and a contrast ratio of 1000:1. All this adds up to a colorful, bright and clear picture with excellent viewing angles.

Under the direct rays of the midday sun, the screen undoubtedly noticeably loses its properties, but nevertheless remains quite readable.

Screen settings provide the ability to change the color palette; there is also a separate “Reading Mode” that allows you to reduce eye strain when reading e-books for a long time.

Ergonomics

Despite the thickness of the case, which is not very small by today's standards, the device seems much thinner in the hand due to the rounded edges.

Operating a smartphone even with one hand is quite comfortable, but the beautiful and practical metal in this case plays a cruel joke and the body slides very much, trying to jump out of the palm, so immediately upon purchase, it is better to think about purchasing a protective “bumper”.

When I picked up this smartphone for the first time, I first fell into a slight stupor, and once again read the technical specifications to make sure that it was a 5.5-inch screen installed here, because... The device felt very compact.

Let me remind you that its dimensions are 76 x 151 x 8.45 mm and weighs 165 grams.

To make it a little clearer what I mean, here are a couple of photos comparing the size of the Note 4X with the 5-inch Kingzone N3+ and the 5.5-inch ZTE Blade S6+.

It can be seen that with a 5.5-inch screen diagonal, the Note 4X is a compromise in size between the ZTE “shovel phone” and the 5-inch Kingzone.

operating system

Having released the new model, Xiaomi focused on the international market and the Note 4X was based on the global firmware MIUI Global 8.1 based on Android 6.0.1 with support for the Russian language, as well as a pre-installed Google Play application store out of the box.

Despite the large number of built-in functions and simply a huge number of settings, they are all translated quite well.

During all the time I was “wandering” through the settings, I found only one untranslated item, which is responsible for setting up a smartphone screen lock using a smart cover lock.

I’m sure I won’t make a big discovery, but I’ll still note that the firmware developers did their best - most of the functions that, as a rule, after purchasing a new smartphone have to be implemented by installing third-party applications are already here, everything is very convenient and quite clear.

The device has 32 GB of built-in memory, but about 24 GB remains available to the user, because... part of the memory is allocated to the needs of the system, and part is occupied by a small number of pre-installed applications. These include, for example, an application that works in conjunction with a built-in infrared transmitter and turns a smartphone into a universal remote control.

As far as I understand, this “remote control” is not learnable, but simply contains in its memory a large number of different codes for controlling household appliances, depending on the type.

As an experiment, I tried to configure the control of my Samsung smart TV. The setup took no more than a minute, after which it really became possible to control the basic functions of the TV via a smartphone.

I really liked the work of the fingerprint sensor. In short, its operation simply does not cause practically any comments; recognition occurs instantly, as soon as you barely touch the sensor. In addition, it can also be used to release the camera shutter when taking photographs.

Testing and Performance

As already mentioned, the main feature of the Redmi Note 4X is the Snapdragon 625 MSM8953 processor running on 8 Cortex A53 cores with a clock frequency of 2.0 GHz each. This processor belongs to the mid-price segment and is the third chip from Qualcomm, which is made using 14 Nm FinFET technology (as well as the flagship Snapdragon 820 and 821).

The processor works in conjunction with the Adreno 506 graphics accelerator, 3 GB of LPDDR3 RAM with a frequency of 933 MHz and built-in 32 GB of eMMC 5.1 flash memory.

System information from AIDA64

Moreover, in addition to the standard set of sensors, the smartphone is equipped with a magnetic sensor and a gyroscope, so it can be used as virtual reality glasses.

According to the results of performance testing in Antutu Benchmark, the smartphone scores from 60 to 62 thousand “parrots”. This result, of course, cannot be called amazing, but nevertheless it is quite enough to cope with all modern resource-intensive applications and games.

A few more tests of the graphics subsystem.

To evaluate the smartphone from a gameplay point of view, I installed “RealRacing 3” and “World of Tanks”. Both with the launch and during the game, no freezes or slowdowns were observed; in “WoT” the application independently set the settings to “High”, while during the short time of the game the fps value fluctuated around 38-44.

I am not keen on this game, perhaps with a large number of vehicles and map sizes this value will be less. An example of gameplay can be seen in the video at the end of this review.

There are no problems with catching satellites; the smartphone can receive signals from both American GPS satellites and Russian Glonass, as well as Chinese Beidu. The detection speed is quite high, this is also shown in the video at the end, but it must be taken into account that the place where this testing was carried out is approximately 3 meters from the window.

Battery and autonomy

Xiaomi Redmi Note 4X is equipped with a built-in non-removable lithium-polymer battery with a capacity of 4100 mAh, which, judging by the measurements, is very close to reality.

The manufacturer emphasizes that thanks to the use of a new chip, control over energy consumption is improved and charge leakage is sharply reduced. The battery life stated by the manufacturer is about two days.

This is also close to reality if you look at the battery drain graph during everyday use with a small amount of calls and wifi. Here you can see that during the period of non-use, overnight, the self-discharge of the battery was only 1%.

Photo-video camera

The main camera here uses a 13-megapixel BSI CMOS sensor with ultra-fast PDAF focusing, and the sensors themselves can be from two manufacturers - either Sony IMX258 or Samsung S5K3L8.

In my copy, judging by the information from the engineering menu, the main IMX258 sensor from Sony is installed, but the front 5-megapixel camera, for some reason, turned out to be from Samsung.

In my untrained eye, the camera is quite good for such a relatively budget device, although in bright, sunny weather the picture, in my opinion, turns out a little dark.

Autofocus works really very quickly, including when shooting video, although it also makes mistakes quite often, so it’s not always possible to immediately focus on the desired point in the picture.

When shooting video, two interesting modes are available - slow motion and fast motion.

If we talk about the first, then it is great for shooting dynamic sports moments, for example, when riding a bike or skiing, while the second, the fast shooting mode, in my opinion is only suitable for fun, because It’s difficult to come up with a practical application for yourself.

Fast Motion

Unboxing and testing video

In conclusion, I would like to say a few words about my personal impressions of owning the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4X.

Almost everything shows that they really thought about the smartphone and tried to make everything as user-friendly as possible. This is especially noticeable in the software component where, I repeat, the developers have included a large number of useful functions and little things, for which, as a rule, you have to resort to installing third-party applications.

The interface itself works as it should - clearly and quickly, but at the same time deliberately smoothly, and it seems to me that the reason for this is not only the presence of a good processor and 3GB of RAM, but also a well-functioning operating system.

As for the functions of the device as a telephone, everything turned out to be quite predictable - the audibility of both the owner and his interlocutor is quite good.

Of the things that I still didn’t like, I’ll note the beautiful, metal, but still slippery case, which, despite all the advantages, forces you to hide itself under a plastic or silicone “bumper”.

I'm also a little disappointed with the camera, it's definitely good, but I expected a little more from it.

Nevertheless, the device, of course, is another, quite successful model from an electronics manufacturer known for its quality.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 4X is the most complete smartphone under $200. Its heart is the eight-core 2-GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 processor with an integrated Adreno 506 video core. This chip not only copes well with any modern games at high graphics settings, but also, thanks to the sophisticated 14-nm process technology, saves battery power, the capacity of which is as much as 4100 mAh As a result, we get one of the most durable smartphones on the market.

Big confusion

The main thing is not to confuse Redmi Note 4X with Redmi Note 4, which is built on a ten-core MediaTek Helio X20 processor - even more powerful (perhaps even overly powerful), but much more wasteful in relation to the battery. Also note that the 64GB version of the Redmi Note 4X is based on the same Helio X20 instead of the Snapdragon 625, which is used only in the 32GB version. But all versions have the same 2.5D glass and infrared remote control.

Not without sin

Impressive processing power and a capacious battery are complemented by a 5.5-inch FullHD IPS screen, a metal body and a fingerprint scanner. But the weak camera, relative to other components, does not allow us to call the Redmi Note 4X an ideal smartphone. Costing about the same, the Huawei P8 Lite 2017 takes significantly better photos. However, if you rarely take photographs or only in good lighting, feel free to take the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4X.

My acquaintance with Xiaomi began with the model, which I was delighted with. I believe that for the Chinese giant this is a new page in the company’s history, because the latest products in the Redmi 4 / Redmi Note 4 line are not just powerful, but also stylish. The devices have their own external zest and you really want to admire them.

Equipment

Xiaomi as always: minimalistic design and minimal equipment. It seems to me that even if humanity enters a new technological era, the only thing that will remain unchanged is the white box with the branded “Mi”, a neatly inserted smartphone and a charger with a wire. Yes, there is a lack of a high-quality headset and at least some kind of case or bumper.

Design

Xiaomi Redmi Note 4X is a real bliss for the eyes. The gray and black versions of the smartphone look really stylish. I spent a long time admiring how the rays of light shimmered across the back side, and in general you could see every centimeter of this device. Xiaomi has come to the conclusion that they have developed their own formula for successful design.

Since I started talking about the back side, I’ll tell you a little more. The case is metal with two strips for antenna output at the top and bottom. In the center, in order, are: camera eye, dual flash and fingerprint scanner. Below is the “Mi” logo. That's all! There are no “Made in China” or other lines of text with emblems of various certifications.

In general, the smartphone looks kosher.

The front side also attracted me with a large percentage of the display area. The side bezels are really narrow for a budget device. The upper space where the earpiece with the front camera is located is also very narrow. You won't find this in similar devices from other companies. Below the screen are the classic three touch buttons.

At the bottom end there is an input for Micro USB and a “dual” speaker. In fact, there is only one speaker - to the right of the port, and on the left there is perforation for the microphone. At the top is a 3.5 mm input, an IR port and a microphone for noise reduction.

On the sides there is a classic arrangement of buttons and slots. On one side there is a volume rocker and a power key. On the other side, there is a single combined slot for 2 SIM cards (Micro + Nano) or SIM card + memory card.

In general, the changes from Redmi Note 4 are minimal. They are all beautiful, for which special praise goes to Xiaomi.

Display

You can immediately feel the difference in the matrices in comparison with . The smaller version had a very decent quality display, but not without its problems. For example, strong fading of black at angles. But there was no greenish tint like the Redmi Note 4X. By the way, this device has an LCD IPS matrix. On the left is Redmi Note 4X, and on the right.

  • 5.5 inches
  • resolution 1920 x 1080 pixels
  • dot density 401 ppi

The screen is not covered by a Gorilla Glass panel, so it needs to be treated more carefully, and it’s even better to initially stick some kind of film or other protection. There is a 2.5D rounding of the glass edges. This is already an integral part smartphones from Xiaomi. I would also like to note the good quality of the oleophobic coating. Fingers glide pleasantly across the surface of the screen, and as always, it’s very easy to erase fingerprints and smudges. Any napkin or clothing is enough.

  • Wi-Fi (802.11 a/b/g/n, 2.4 GHz/5 GHz), Bluetooth 4.2, Beidou, FM radio

I would like to notice the difference in RAM consumption. If the Redmi 4 Prime most often had ≈900 MB free, then the Redmi Note 4X had ≈1400 MB free. What is causing such a huge difference is unknown, but I will assume that it is a matter of firmware.

Although, as you can see, in the benchmarks it looks like a regular Redmi Note 4.

If you encounter this, then do not rush to return the product or write an angry review to the Chinese store. The fact is that the global firmware for Redmi Note 4X is based on the assembly from the regular version, that is, Redmi Note 4.

Hence a reasonable question: how to check Xiaomi smartphone for originality? Just go to the official Xiaomi website and in the “Check products” section enter the IMEI and serial number that is indicated on the box.

Unfortunately, there is no NFC module. Still, you can find support for wireless payments and other functions using this technology.

And I once wrote earlier that there may be a problem with 4G networks in Moscow for clients of the Beeline operator. Having understood this issue a little, I will clarify that the absence of lane 20 should primarily worry residents of the region. Inside the Moscow Ring Road this lane is almost never used.

Performance

The smartphone is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 chipset, one of the most popular solutions today. This processor can be found in all price categories, even. For example, . Of course, the “Dragon” is a little weaker than the one used in the usual MediaTek Helio X20, but it has better power consumption and heat dissipation. And the graphics chip is used by Adreno, not Mali. This means that in games you can expect more comfortable FPS and not very strong throttling.

3GB RAM is ideal for this smartphone. Xiaomi's proprietary shell is quite power-hungry, so buying a younger version with 2 GB of RAM should immediately be rejected.

According to synthetic tests:

Everything in the games is at a decent level. Unless it's impossible to play World of Tanks Blitz at maximum graphics settings. Redmi Note 4X produces only 20-25 FPS in this case, which does not correspond to a comfortable game. But if you lower the graphics to medium settings, the game will be more enjoyable. By the way, after almost an hour of playing I managed to heat the smartphone to 49 degrees, which is a good result. There is nothing to say about 2D games - all simple toys “fly” without any lags or freezes.

Photo and video

Samsung S5K3L8 is a fairly common sensor in mid-range devices. For example, it is in, UMi Z, Redmi 4 /, in a smartphone with a dual camera. It is also possible to have a sensor not from Samsung, but from Sony - IMX258 - another very popular photo module. It is installed in both budget models and more expensive ones. Still, software processing and algorithms used when shooting photos and videos play a big role.

Main camera

  • resolution 13 MP
  • aperture f/2.0
  • single pixel size 1.12 microns

A large number of functions and shooting modes immediately catch your eye: tilt-shift, slow-motion video, a huge selection of color correction presets and much more. I would also like to mention the HDR mode. It processes areas with a lot of light very efficiently and you can get some pretty nice pictures as a result.

A few more examples photos from the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4X camera.

Of course, I can’t leave you without the opportunity to study all the examples in original resolution. Archive with photographs.

Front-camera

  • resolution 5 MP
  • aperture f/2.0
  • single pixel size 1.13 microns
  • wide angle 85°

The front camera boasts a slightly larger single pixel size. It is unlikely that in practice it will be possible to notice the difference at all. However, the quality is tolerable; you can’t exactly call the Redmi Note 4X a “selfie phone,” but it’s suitable for posting photos on social networks.

Video shooting

The maximum recording quality is 1080P / 30 frames per second, in 720P the number of frames is already 120. Of course, there is no optical stabilization. Still, the smartphone is not in the same price category. Although the video quality is of an acceptable level, there are not even any special artifacts.

Shell

Xiaomi Redmi Note 4X runs Android 6.0.1 and has the MIUI 8 proprietary shell installed. It’s really beautiful in appearance. The icons are brought to the same size, moderately colorful and at the same time there is quite a wide functionality. There are several themes to choose from, and if you haven’t chosen anything for yourself, you can go to the built-in store, where you can buy or download new themes for free with a complete change in design.

And, of course, the typical functions of Chinese smartphones: security and protection of personal data.

Overall, the system runs very smoothly and comfortably on this device. Multitasking works well and applications are not unloaded from the smartphone’s memory immediately after minimizing. And most importantly, MIUI is easy to learn and is suitable for “complete dummies” in the field of mobile technology.

Sound quality

Information about any amplifiers or dedicated DAC that are installed in Xiaomi Redmi Note 4X, I did not find. And you can hardly expect crystal clear sound from a $150 smartphone.

And yet the device sounds good both in headphones and from its original speaker.

Only at maximum volume does the latter start to sound hoarse, but this is common for many in the mobile phone market.

I'll start with the obvious thing - Xiaomi Redmi Note 4X simply has no competitors. So far, no manufacturer has released such a beautiful device with a fairly powerful, but at the same time energy-efficient filling. And so that the price is loyal to ordinary customers. This model does not have any obvious disadvantages or shortcomings. I definitely recommend purchasing.
